Why use this tool
- Quick web site background check
How do you know if the site you are browsing is trully popular?
Knowing the caliber of the site you are on is very important for webmasters.
Let's say that you are comparing two PFI (Paid for Inclusion) directories.
Considering that they both deal the same niche and they both have the same PageRank, in which would you purchase a link?

Problems with the tool
- Lack of accuracy
Sites below top 40,000 have fairly unnacurate traffic ratings.
Alexa bases its rankings primarily upon surfers who use the Alexa Toolbar.
Surfers who have the toolbar are not representative of the entire internet population.
Most non-English web sites for example, rank a lot worse than they should.
- Alexa, spyware?!
Amazon has an affiliate program which pays affiliates for purchases made through the Alexa Toolbar (as long as the user acquired the toolbar through the affiliate's web site).
For some interesting reason, Adaware programs seem to frown upon the Alexa Toolbar.
- "Hacking" your Alexa Ranking
Get the Alexa toolbar and visit your site a couple of times from different computers (or varying IP addresses.)
If you persistently do this for a number of days in a row, your Alexa Rank will experience a significant boost.
