Web Design Tips
What is good design?
-
Designing is all about communication.
You, the designer, are supposed to feed your audience the content in an
appropriate manner.
Perfection is achieved when nothing is superfluous or when every element on the
page serves some purpose in expressing your subject.
How do I make professional-looking designs?
-
Get paper and a pencil and start sketching out a grid of your general
layout and navigation system. Your layout should reflect what the content of
the page is. Concentrate on creating a good typographic-based hierarchy by
designating areas for headers, body text and so on. When you glance over your
page, the information should be logically arranged and easy to skim through.
This will not be easy so be prepared to do lots of revisions. Good design evolves from trial and error. The next step is
transferring your ideas into PhotoShop and introducing appropriate imagery
and color. Once you have the final layout, split it into a table (unless you are using CSS for positioning) and convert into HTML (Adobe ImageReady has built-in support).
What should I be thinking about when designing?
-
Come up with visual metaphors inspired from the content itself. If you are designing a web site about classical music, think about
subtle and traditional means of presenting the information. If the site is
about hip-hop, it should reflect it through the design. Both the classical and the hip-hop
sites should differ not only in their imagery. Each should have an original layout, color scheme and navigation menu
that reflects its subject. This is where true creativity comes through.
